Director of Development and Marketing, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, MO

For the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, we are seeking a Director of
Development and Marketing.  The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of the
nation's preeminent encyclopedic museums with substantial holdings of
European and American art, and an internationally regarded collection of
Asian art.  Current projects and programs include additions and renovations
to the museum's landmark building and planned celebrations of the 75th
anniversary of the museum's founding, which commence in December, 2008.

The successful applicant will directly supervise seven staff and oversee
approximately 25 staff in related divisions/departments.  The Director of
Development and Marketing will be responsible for identifying and attracting
visitors, members, press, broad-based audiences and a diverse range of
contributed income to the museum and will develop and implement plans to
accomplish steady growth of resources for operating expenses and projects
(capital, endowment, art acquisitions, etc.), including major and planned
gifts, an annual fund, membership, grants, sponsorships and other
contributions.  Duties include creating, developing and staffing major gift
and planned giving programs; overseeing all development and marketing
division programs; establishing a resource development program based on the
systematic cultivation and upgrading of donors; managing fundraising efforts
to support specific museum programs and initiatives; directing the
membership program and the annual fund; developing research on the museum's
audiences to establish goals and timelines; coordinating and integrating
existing marketing and public affairs efforts; and representing the museum
to various audiences, constituencies and affiliates.

Candidates will have a minimum of ten years of increasing responsibility in
the field of philanthropy and strong preference will be given to those with
experience in arts fundraising.  It is essential that the successful
candidate have a proven track record of substantial fundraising, including
personal experience managing annual campaigns and in-depth knowledge of
capital campaigns, planned giving and major gifts.  Preferences will be
given to candidates who have demonstrated innovative and creative approaches
to fundraising and developing resources.  The Director of Development and
Marketing must have a minimum of five years successful experience developing
and mentoring staff.  BA required; advanced degree preferred.  Generous

will be provided.
