SEASONAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT GARNET GHOST TOWN

Garnet Ghost Town is a National Register eligible historic site managed jointly by the 501 (c) (3) non-profit the Garnet Preservation Association and the Bureau of Land Management. This volunteer opportunity is an excellent way to get practical history- or museum-related experience.

History of Garnet: In 1895, Dr. Armistead Mitchell erected a stamp mill deep in the Garnet Range mountains, and the town of Garnet soon formed around it. Three years later, the town of Garnet could boast over 1,000 residents and 30 businesses. A raging fire in 1912 and the general decline in mining opportunities sent most residents packing, but Garnet experienced a brief resurgence in the 1930's during the Great Depression after FDR doubled the price of gold. World War II drew most residents away again, and when the last original resident, Frank Davey, died in 1947, Garnet officially became a 'ghost town'.

For this volunteer opportunity, LODGING and a FOOD STIPEND are available. Lodging would be in either one of our historic miners cabins in the ghost town. The cabins in Garnet have no electricity or running water.

Garnet Ghost Town is located approximately 40 miles east of Missoula, Montana off a gravel road in the Montana Rocky Mountains. There is no public transportation to Garnet, so a car would be helpful.

Volunteers will assist recreation staff to:
-Provide visitor information at the visitor center.
-Visitor management.
-Leading tours of the ghost town.
-Occasional sales at visitor center.

And possibly, depending on the volunteer's interest:
-Assistance with the curation of historic artifacts.
-Stabilization of historic structures.
-Maintenance of historic recreation areas and facilities.
-Assistance with programming and conduct of special events.
-Assistance with the development of interpretive signs and exhibits.
-Assistance with brushing and cutting trails.

A two-week minimum commitment is required. One month is preferable; more than one month is optimal. But we are flexible! Dates are flexible to the volunteer's schedule, but must occur during the summer season, from June 1 to August 31, 2002.
