Director Search
Newcomb Art Gallery
Tulane University, New Orleans, LA

For the renowned Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director. Founded in 1834, Tulane is one of the nation's most highly regarded and selective independent research universities, offering degrees in the liberal arts, science and engineering, architecture, business, law, social work, medicine, and public health and tropical medicine. Gifts to the University from Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1886 established Newcomb College in memory of her daughter, Harriott Sophie Newcomb. The college became the first degree-granting college for women to be founded within a university in the United States. Today Newcomb-Tulane College enrolls all undergraduates at the university, while the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute enhances women's education at Tulane University.

The Newcomb Art Department was established in 1887 coincident with the founding of the Newcomb Pottery School, the celebrated Arts & Crafts ceramics project, which was active until 1940. Following the wishes of Josephine Louise Newcomb that education look to the "practical side of life," the Newcomb Pottery School was an ambitious program of vocational training for young women artists and became one of the most significant American art potteries of the first half of the twentieth century. The art program expanded to include other disciplines of arts and craft including illustrated bookplates, jewelry and silversmithing, embroidered textiles and hand-bound books. During its years of operation, the Newcomb Pottery provided a full or partial livelihood for young women, opening the possibility of economic independence and educational opportunities unknown at the time.

In 1996, the Art Department opened expanded and renovated facilities as the Newcomb Art Gallery, a 3,600 square foot exhibition facility dedicated to presenting first rate contemporary and historic exhibitions to the Tulane University and New Orleans communities. The permanent collection consists of approximately 5,000 works focused on Newcomb Pottery, Tiffany Glass and other American Arts & Crafts and industrial arts objects, and holds paintings, drawings, sculpture, and photographs of past and present faculty and students of the Newcomb Art Department. Encompassing what is now the Carroll Gallery and the Woldenberg Art Center, the Newcomb Art Gallery serves as a bridge between Tulane's Art Studio and Art History programs and assumes the guardianship of the Tulane Art Collection.

The Newcomb Art Gallery is dedicated to the enrichment of the cultural and intellectual life of the Tulane University and New Orleans communities. The Gallery is committed to the presentation of outstanding exhibitions that will stimulate visitors to think and to learn about the art of diverse times, places, and peoples. It aims to present exhibitions of national significance while seeking to preserve and promote the artistic traditions of Newcomb College and Tulane University. It seeks fruitful collaboration with other constituencies in the Tulane community, especially those that are linked to the legacy and identity of Newcomb College. Since weathering Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005, Tulane and the Newcomb Art Gallery have rebounded and are seeking to build upon their past successes as world-class institutions addressing local, national and international issues and audiences.

The successful applicant for the position of Director will possess the skills necessary to lead the Gallery to a position of local and national importance, and to broaden its base of support. The position reports to the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts. She/he will be a team-building and "hands-on" manager, with museum curatorial credentials, fiscal management skills, and a strong communications, marketing and community relations background.

The Director will develop and maintain a vigorous program of exhibitions rooted in current curatorial practice that stimulate and appeal to a wide range of audiences; oversee and manage the collections by ensuring their preservation, interpretation and growth; and recruit, hire and motivate staff, while encouraging a climate of professionalism and respect. The Director will develop and administer the Gallery's annual budget and develop a targeted fundraising program with an emphasis on annual support. In addition to maintaining the confidence of the Tulane Administration, the Director will build an active and engaged Advisory Board for the Gallery, participate visibly in community affairs related to the visual arts, and represent the Gallery to all its constituents (including but not limited to local, regional and national audiences) and play a leadership role in regional cultural activities.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years curatorial experience in a similar directorial and administrative position with strong management skills; demonstrated knowledge of American Association of Museums standards, methods and procedures, and excellent managerial, interpersonal, communications and organizational skills. MA required; PhD preferred. Detailed knowledge of contemporary art essential; knowledge of ceramics and glass, both historic and contemporary, is strongly desired. Tulane University is an Equal Opportunity/ADA/Affirmative Action employer committed to excellence through diversity. All eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.
