Definitely. The person who names a figure first "loses."

For one job I had to settle for a ridiculously low salary (the salary my
predecessor had been making) for about 4 months until the next fiscal year
started, at which time I would be able to name a price once they had been
able to see what I could do. I worked my tail off and then when budget time
came around I named quite a large figure relative to what I had been making,
which to my shock they were happy to meet. It definitely started me off on
the right foot when percentage increases were given out annually thereafter.
You might think about that kind of a strategy if it looks as if they are
going to cheap out on you--a probationary, lower figure with a decent jump
after a certain amount of time when you have proven yourself (because of
course you are a great person and an amazing worker, as are all of us on
this list!).

Subject: Re: Salary Question

Ah, the salary game. Basically, it boils down to a big, excuse the
expression,
"pissing contest", and who blinks first.

...You should
try to get the interviewer to state a salary first which gives you the
chance
to counter and might end you up with more money than you were going to ask
for
in the first place. (
