        I would like to recommend as excellent, informative reading the
articles "Thomas H. Benton" has been writing for the Chronice of Higher
Education. The current one (17 July) is: "If You Must Go to Grad School

This also has a link to his first article: "So You Want to Go to Grad
School?"
        Yes, his view is bleak but accurate.
