The National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, DC has a
non-federal position open.  (I'm posting this for a colleague, so do not

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Chief Exhibits: Develop/Eval exhibit proposals.  Generate concepts, models,
and case layout.  Follow through from detailed drawings to final
development.  Collab with staff to maximize education/scientific impact of
museum.  Exp in grant development.  Need an independent worker, exc project
manger, superb collaborator.  Bachelors in exhibition, design, or related
field.  3-5 years experience.  Plus for Masters.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF JOB :
        *       Heads exhibits program at the NMHM/AFIP which is a national
and international resource for professional health care workers and the
general public, drawing upon diverse collections with National Historical
Landmark status.  Develops and/or evaluates exhibits and exhibit proposals.
Oversees the planning and production of exhibits ranging from single cases
to entire galleries.  Oversees temporary exhibit program.  Supervises
Exhibit Department staff and assigns projects.  Develops and monitors
Exhibit Department budget.  Initiates or participates in the development of
grant applications alternative funding opportunities.  Works closely with
Education and Collections staff to expand the impact of the Museum.  Serves
as institutional representative to peer institutions and collaborative
entities.  Serves as primary advisor to Director on exhibit-related issues.
Solicits internal and external exhibit proposals for permanent and temporary
exhibit installations.  Evaluates exhibit proposals based on content,
timeliness, use of artifacts, and educational potential.  Presents valid
exhibit proposals for further approval by Museum Director.  Oversees exhibit
development process by assembling and monitoring exhibit teams consisting of
Exhibits Department staff, contract labor and other department staff as
appropriate.  Generates policy on exhibit development process.  Depending on
team needs, plays the role of project manager or exhibit designer.
Coordinates exhibit production with AFIP Exhibits Production Department.
Keeps exhibit development process on track and on budget, generating time
and cost records as required.  Coordinates with museum registrar,
conservator and collections staff to insure that objects are displayed
appropriately.  Generates concept drawings, models and case-layout sketches.
Creates exhibit environment appropriate to content.  Follows through with
detailed construction drawings to exact scale, determines the best material,
finishes and color to use to achieve an objective.  Establishes and manages
Exhibit Department budget.  Participates in grant application development,
grant implementation and securing extramural funding as related to exhibit
programs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (USE BULLET FORMAT):
        Include how many people report to and are evaluated by incumbent,

        *       Independently generates exhibit proposals, collaborates on
exhibit proposals, and identifies appropriate externally generated exhibit
proposals, based on broad institutional goals.

        *       Independently manages exhibit projects.

        *       Independently tracks project and department budgets.

        *       Conceptualizes, project manages, designs, and generates
exhibit designs and related documents for exhibits.

        *       Independently determines work priorities for subordinates.

        *       Prepares written reports and makes recommendations on
pending exhibit projects to Museum Director.

        *       Independently deals with collaborators, product support
companies and personnel on acquisition of equipment, materials and services
to be used for exhibits.

        *       Represents the Museum in collaborative exhibit development
projects.

        *       Participates in grant application development, grant
implementation and securing extramural funding as related to exhibit
programs.



MAJOR QUALIFICATIONS :

        Education Required:  Bachelors degree in exhibition, design or
related field

        Prior Experience Required:  Five years experience in museum exhibits
or related design and production.  Knowledge of the current practices in
exhibition development.

        Other Mandatory Requirements: Excellent oral and written
communication skills.
Successful extramural funding track record.

        Other Desirable Requirements: Masters degree in exhibition, design
or related field.
