TITLE: ARCHIVIST

Bessemer Historical Society (BHS), a private non-profit 501 © (3) in Pueblo, Colorado is seeking a qualified archivist. The archivist will oversee the preservation of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. Archival Collection. The collection was donated to BHS in January of 2003 and 99% unprocessed.

Broad Scope of Position:
The Archivist will be responsible for the preservation, maintenance, arrangement, re-housing, cataloging and interpretation of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. archival collection. This collection of maps, employee records, accounts, films, photographs, labor relations records and miscellaneous items in the CF& I collection are housed in 18 rooms within the historic Main Office building of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation. This vast collection offers a wealth of information both of historical interest in the fields of industrial and labor history and of personal employee history. It traces the history of the huge enterprise that began as the Colorado Coal and Iron Company, which in turn is the history of Southern Colorado. Duties will include various technical processing activities such as evaluation of materials, sorting, and arranging collections as well as planning and supervising such activities where appropriate. The Archivist will oversee and direct volunteer and internship projects. In addition he or she will also serve as a member of the curatorial team for exhibition development, interpretation and research and assist with collection development. 

Minimum Qualifications:
Advanced degree in history, library science, museum studies or public history and 2 years archival management experience.   

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of archival concepts, methodology and techniques
Ability to follow and maintain established procedures for archival collection
Ability to perform research and identification of and evaluation/appraisal of potential archival acquisitions
Ability to utilize detailed knowledge of collections to prepare descriptions and finding aids
Willingness to perform outreach in the solicitation of donors and acquisitions
Knowledge of and experience in fundraising for the archival collection
Excellent communication and public relation skills
 
Salary and Benefits:  $34,000 – $37,000 and health benefits
