Recently, a new wave of e-mail petitions regarding funding cuts to NEA,
NPR, and PBS have been circulating. As one of the moderators on this list,
it is my job to filter out SPAM (Unsolicited Commercial E-mail), messages
requesting a subscription to the list (or errant signoff commands), and
chain letters. Before you send a chain letter to the list, please read the
following:

http://www.salonmagazine.com/tech/feature/1999/05/10/petitions/index.html

To quote from the article:

There is, of course, a distinction to be made between
using e-mail to communicate and using it to reproduce
spam-like petitions. Chain letters have proven
themselves to be fairly useless; more sophisticated
petitions, posted to a Web site that collects signatures,
have garnered more respect.

Bottom line, it is one thing to encourage activism on issues that affect
the profession, but
chain letters are not the way to accomplish this. Please do not take it
personally when
a posting of an e-mail petition is rejected.

thank you,
