We have a groundhog burrow with an opening just next to the concrete apron
around the pool. A few years ago, when our youngest cat Smudge was less than
a year old, one of that year's crop of young groundhogd liked to lie on the
concrete next to the hole and sun itself. More than once, we would look out
the window, to find Smudge the kitten also sunning herself, nose to nose
with the little groundhog. The following year, there being no groundhogs in
residence, she used to play in the evenings with a young skunk that would
wander into our garden. Well, after all, they were both black and white! Sue
only discovered this when she went out to get our three cats in for the
night, counted tails and found there were four, not three - and one was a
tad bushy for a kitty. Moral: don't count on your cats to keep the wild
critters away, if they (the critters, that is) are anything larger than
field mice!
