MDA 1998 Conference


The Cultural Grid: Content & Connections
9-11 September 1998
Chancellors Conference Centre, University of Manchester



In the year that sees:

7 the launch of the National Grid for Learning;

7 #50 million of lottery money for the development of digitised content;

7 and funding for documentation and ICT projects from the Heritage
Lottery Fund


the 1998 MDA conference The Cultural Grid: Content & Connections will
focus on practical applications that are creating content for museum
users.  The conference will provide a springboard for future partnership
projects and will include two days of practical workshops on 7-8
September.  The main conference begins on Wednesday 9 September with an
Exhibition of all key software suppliers serving the cultural sector.
As well as two conference receptions there will be a conference dinner
attended by Loyd Grossman, Chairman of the Campaign for Museums and
Commissioner of the Museums & Galleries Commission and English Heritage.


Decision makers, educators, ICT and documentation specialists in museums
and other cultural organisations should attend.

The Conference will include papers on:


7 The National Art Library Heritage Project (V&A)

7 The Living Library Project (RCHME)

7 Art & Literacy: relating global identitiy to local understanding
(Cartwright Hall)

7 Content & Creation: realities and pitfalls (Science Museum)

7 Volunteers & Vision: The Imperial War Museum Experience

7 The Future is Virtual: is virtual reality the future of heritage
presentation? (Hartlepool Museum)

7 Microgalleries & Collections Management Systems: getting the
connections right (Cognitive Applications)

7 Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN)

Evening Receptions at Manchester

Whitworth Art Gallery - Wednesday 9th September

An evening reception with drinks and nibbles will be held at the
Whitworth Art Gallery, one of the finest art centres in the region.
Exhibits include contemporary art, textiles, wallpapers, watercolours
and prints.  The reception will be held in the famous South Gallery
which overlooks Whitworth Park.  There will be opportunities for a tour
of part of the collection.

Manchester United Football Club Museum at Old Trafford - Thursday 10th
September

The recently opened Manchester United Football Club Museum at Old
Trafford will be the venue for Thursday s reception - drinks and nibbles
to be served.  There will be guided tours of this unusual and lively new
museum which claims to be  packed with everything there is to know about
the Club .  Of particular note is the trophy room, various memorabilia,
the interactive floor and Manchester United s Hall of Fame. This is
certainly a visit not to be missed.


Discounts will be available for first time delegates to an MDA
conference/workshop.  There will also be a limited number of sponsored
and mentored places available for delegates in need of financial
assistance.
