Croatia gets back exhibits from the Jasenovac concentration camp memorial
center

ZAGREB, Croatia--The Jasenovac collection of exhibits and archives from the
World War II concentration camp in Croatia returned on 5 December to its
place of origin from the Holocaust Museum in Washington, where it had been
for the past year. Tens of thousands of artifacts, written documents,
photographs, and film footage are being placed back in the renovated
Jasenovac Memorial Center. (...)
Only days before the Croatian Army offensive to recapture the region in May
1995, Simo Brdar, former deputy director and a curator of the Jasenovac
Memorial Center, collected the archive material and exhibits and
transported them from the museum to the Bosnian Serb stronghold Banja Luka.
The collection was kept in a local archive center under inadequate conditions.
Last year the Holocaust Museum in Washington learned of the situation and,
with the mediation of NATO-led SFOR peacekeepers, came to an agreement with
Milorad Dodik, then prime minister of Republika Srpska, to transport the
collection to Washington for safekeeping. The exhibits and archives were
brought to Washington in early October 2000, and by 26 October, the
Croatian government and the Holocaust Museum had reached an agreement on
the return of the Jasenovac collection to Croatia. (...)
