Spaces are still available in the SOLINET Preservation class "Disaster
Preparedness". Send three participants from the same institution and
receive a free fourth enrollment for the same class. Students enrolled
in library or archives programs may attend at half price. Any
institution in the state of Virginia qualifies for the SOLINET member
rate for this class, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for
the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access.

****DISASTER PREPAREDNESS****

http://tinyurl.com/b3zlv

Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters. To
prevent unnecessary loss of materials, librarians and archivists must be
prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies.
This requires that institutions have knowledgeable staff and written
plans for dealing with emergency situations, so that fewer disasters
occur and damaged materials can be salvaged successfully.

This one-day class will provide the training necessary to plan,
organize, and execute a disaster plan and a salvage operation. In
addition to in-depth discussion on the disaster planning process, there
will be demonstrations of salvage techniques, including:

*air-drying books

*packing out wet materials

*separating and drying manuscripts

*rinsing books

*drying photographic materials

Time and Location: Thursday, July 21st, 9am-4pm, at the Massanutten
Regional Library, Harrisonburg, VA.

Cost: $145.00 for SOLINET members, $185.00 for non-members. Anyone
living in Virginia may attend at the member rate, and students of
library and archives programs may attend at half price. Be sure to
choose "member rate" or "student rate" when registering online to ensure
proper billing.

Intended Audience: This class is designed for staff members responsible
for, or interested in, organizing and implementing institutional or
cooperative disaster preparedness and response procedures. Those in
charge of maintenance or building facilities are encouraged to attend
with library and archives staff.

Instructor: Elizabeth Ferguson Keathley, Field Services Officer for
SOLINET Preservation Services.
