Position at the McCord Museum of Canadian History

Chief of Conservation Services / Objects Conservator

The McCord Museum of Canadian History, located in downtown Montreal,
seeks a motivated individual as Chief of Conservation Services /
Objects Conservator.  This position has been newly created with a
view to expanding the mandate of Conservation Services to include
commercialization of its experrise.  Reporting to the Museum's
Executive Director, the position combines the functions related to
the supervision of the Conservation team and its activities with
those related to the conservation of the Museum's collection of
three-dimensional objects.

The McCord's Conservation team consists of the Chief of Conservation
Services/Objects Conservator, one Conservator of Costume and
Textiles and one Technician in paper conservation.  The McCord
Museum collection includes over 90,000 objects and 750,000
historical photographs related to the social history of Canada
during the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Of particular importance
are those items related to the field of ethnography, decorative
arts, costume and textiles, prints and drawings and photographic
archives.

The responsibilities of this position are: . To assume all the tasks
related to the administration and commercialization of Conservation
Services; . To undertake the tasks related to the conservation of
three-dimensional objects; . To co-ordinate all activities related to
preventive conservation.

The successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency in
conservation management and a thorough understanding of object
conservation.  He or she must possess strong interpersonal skills,
effective oral and written communication skills and be able to work
dynamically and with flexibility in a multidisciplinary team.  The
candidate must be capable of initiative in order to ensure, in the
short term, the commercialization of the Museum's Conservation
Services.

Qualified applicants must hold a Master's degree in art conservation
or an equivalent combination of training and experience in objects
conservation, with a minimum of five years' experience supervising a
conservation team and their activities in a museum.  Experience in a
museum with a varied collection of objects is also an asset.  The
successful candidate must be completely fluent in both English and
French.

This is a full-time position for a two-year term, and is renewable.
