Here at Conner Prairie we have a very active foodways program, including daily cooking at various posts on our historic grounds, cooking classes using both an open hearth, and cast iron cookstoves, as well as other programs such as our Hearthside Suppers, and Taste of the Past. Both of these allow visitors to eat historic food that is either prepared for them or they help prepare. (Here in Indiana health code prevents us serving food to visitors on our historic grounds, unless they help prepare the food, or it is prepared in a modern kitchen.) The Taste of the Past program also provide an interpreter to talk about the history of the food they are eating. Many of these programs are spearheaded by our Program Supervisor for Historic Foodways and Gardens.

We also have an immersion history program called Weekend on the Farm, where participants spend a weekend living on an 1880s era farm- part of the experience includes the preparing of meals.

All of the recipes we use are researched from historic cookbooks of the periods we portray on our grounds.

If you are interested in learning more, you can visit our website www.connerprairie.org. I would be happy to talk more about it as well, if you would like to contact me off list.

Hope this helps.
