The following resolution was passed unanimously at the Annual Membershipp
Meeting of ARLIS/NA, the Art Libraries Society of North America, which
was held on February 14, 1994 during the ARLIS Annual Conference. Over
400 art librarians were registered.

ARLIS/NA - The Art Libraries Society of North America - affirms the
following principles:

That
every art museum needs a library to support institutional research and
to serve as a link to outside resources.

That
every art museum library is a resource reflecting the uniqueness of the
institution, and an intellectual asset to that institution.

That
every art museum needs a professional librarian to manage information
and research resources, with appropriate staffing and financial support,
and to oversee the physical wellbeing of the library collection.

That
we do not support the establishment or maintenance of reciprocal
arrangements, such as inter-library loan of valuable library resources
or the exchange of publications, with an art museum without professional
library staff.

In addition
we deplore the actions of the Board of Trustees of the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum in permitting the closing of the museum's library, and
the dismissal of the museum's library staff.
