That huge increase in hits we got made me curious enough to expend a little
extra effort examining our server logs. The results are interesting. I've
included here only the hosts that accessed our site more than 500 times
(the complete log is too big to email). Keep in mind that any one host may
provide Internet acess to hundreds of clients. For example, the AOL host,
ww-te63.proxy.aol.com, may have thousands of clients accounts on their
host. A quick scan down the list indicates that a large number of our hits
come from commercial servers such as AOL and WebTV. This represents a big
shift. Most of our hits used to come from the .edu and .gov domains. I
am happy to see that we're also getting a large number of hits from
educational sites such as k12.ca.us. A scan down the complete log (not
shown here) shows a large number of visitors coming from hosts located in
Europe, Australia, Mexico and Africa.
If anyone is really interested in this kind of stuff, I'll be happy to
email the complete (sorted) log file provided that person will share their
conclusions with MUSEUM-L and webhead-l.
