    I don't know about other scientific spoofs or the issue of reputable
    magazines printing them, but the Globe and Mail had an article on a
    pre-historic bone flute about 1-2 months ago.  A Canadian researcher
    had done measurements on the finger holes on the flute and determined
    that they very nearly correspond to the musical scale we use today.
