Greetings to Listers:

>This is going to sound like a strange question, but does anyone out there have any idea on requirements for public spaces and restrooms?

>The situation is that our museum leases a small portion of the local library. We are a totally separate organization, but as the current configuration mandates, we share both staff and public restrooms with the library. We do not currently have a separate entrance from the outside of the building, and must be closed when the library closes.

>However, planning has begun on renovations that will provide the museum and the library with separate external entrances. This renovation will be funded by the City, with administration of funds through a library foundation board. The library would like to not include any additional restrooms in the museum space, and continue to allow museum patrons and staff to use the restrooms in the library portion of the building.

>The problem is that if the library closes, museum patrons and staff will be without any restroom facility. Is there any building code relevant to this? I have suggested that a ADA accessible unisex restroom be built in the new portion to be occupied by the museum. The library is fighting this as they do not want to incure any additional building costs.

Any suggestions or pointers to building code and lease agreements by listers is greatly appreciated. You may reply off-list if preferred. My e-mail address is [log in to unmask]

Regards,
Teresa in West Virginia
