I followed Tom Moritz's suggestion for checking the archives of Museum-L
but only February through June of 1994 are currently available. My
memory of the earlier discussion agrees with Tom's - it was late Fall or
early Winter of 1993 and those logs are no longer archived on the
Listserv. I vaguely recall John Chadwick mentioning that it wasn't possible
to keep more than a few months of older messages because of lack of disk
space and asking if anyone could help out? Did anything ever get resolved?

Before you go and "GET" a log in order to read a previous month's worth
of messages, make sure you have a bit of space on your own disk. I
retrieved June's log out of curiosity and it was 110K (and the month is
only 8 days old). Museum-L is an active list.

Here's a less demanding method of searching the archives if you are looking
for something specific:

<Cut here>--------
//ListSrch JOB Echo=no
Database Search DD=Rules
//Rules DD *
S <topic> in MUSEUM-L Since dd-MM-YY
index date.8 sender.30 subject.40
print
/*
//  EOJ
<cut here>------

Replace <topic> with the word(s) you want to search. Replace dd-MM-YY
with the date you want to begin searching from; don't make it any earlier
than the earliest month that still has a log, right now it would be
01-02-94. Send the message to [log in to unmask], leave subject line
blank. I tried the search on the word Authenticity and got 15 hits - 14 of
them had Authenticity in the subject line but one from Jim Croft was on
and unrelated topic and just happened to contain the word authenticity in
the body of the message. Rather impressive.

Thanks to Richard Pearce-Moses of Arizona State and the Heard Museum for
the search message. Put it in your save file and copy it into a message to
any Listserv that maintains an archive of past messages. Just make a few
changes - topic, name of Listserv and date from which you want the search
to begin and send it off. And, of course, remember to send it to the
LISTSERV - otherwise everybody who reads Museum-L will find out what you
are searching for.
