Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village
Simmons Internship Program 2003

Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village is accepting applications for the
2003 Simmons Internship Program. Designed for students enrolled in
graduate programs interested in pursuing careers in history, American
studies, museum studies or related fields, the Simmons Internship Program
provides participants with an exceptional opportunity to experience life in
a major American history museum.

During the summer of 2003, each Simmons Intern will work on one of two
projects.

Glass Collection Documentation Project – The collection consists of several
hundred pressed glass patterns from the mid 19th to the early 20th
century. The intern will work with a curator to research and identify
pressed glass patterns and manufacturers of items in the collection.

Firearms Collection Documentation Project – The collection includes more
than fifty American rifles, fifty shotguns, and seventy-five pistols. The
artifacts range from 18th-century craftsmen-made firearms to 20th century
mass-produced items. Most of the firearms were used for recreation, though
some military firearms are included in the collection. The intern will work
with a curator and a registrar to inventory, research and do basic
cataloging of the collection.

Two internships will be awarded. Each intern will work directly with a
curator who serves as a mentor. In addition to completing specific project
assignments, Simmons Interns are encouraged to participate in the larger
life of the institution in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding
of the varied aspects of museum work. The capstone experience of the
internship is a formal public presentation of project results.

Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, the largest indoor-outdoor museum
in the United States, has an extensive collection with major holdings in
American technology, transportation, and domestic life. The Benson Ford
Research Center houses an outstanding collection of automotive history,
design history, and advertising materials.

Stipend and Term of Internship: The Simmons Internship Program is funded by
the Vera W. and Walter E. Simmons Endowment Fund. Interns are awarded
stipends of up to $ 1400 per month, with a maximum internship length of
three months. Preference will be given to those applicants who can
participate the full three months. Projects typically begin at the end of
the spring term, but starting and ending dates for individual internships
are negotiable.

To Apply: Send letter of application describing background, experience, and
interest in one of the projects, along with a 1-2 page curriculum vita and
two letters of reference by February 28, 2003 to:
