I have also seen job ads that specify "local applicants only," presumably
because the museum cannot afford to bring in outside candidates. But would
they agree to interview an excellent long-distance candidate if that
candidate were willing to pay his/her own travel and lodging expenses?
Conversely, if you were that candidate and the museum told you "pay your own
way if we agree to interview you," would you feel this was unfair? I
haven't made up my mind about this--I always pay to bring in long-distance
candidates but I'm sure I will soon be asked to cease this practice, and I
don't want to limit my search to local candidates and hire someone less
qualified simply because it's cheaper in the short run.

Hi Joy!

Based on my meager experience, I have yet to find a museum
prepared to pay travel expenses. Most museums will pay all
(or some of) such expenses for higher level positions
(director, deputy/assistant director, chief financial
officer, etc.) . . . but the lower down you go, the more you
have to invest in making your career work for you.
