Just a note on jpegs...correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that jpeg files are compressed to reduce memory. Every time the file is opened and closed the computer will "throw away" a little bit of visual information it does not think you need.  Over time this will result in reduced picture quality.  I save important images as pdf files.  The pdf format does not result in any loss of quality over time.  I believe you need Adobe Photoshop to create pdfs, but it is worth the time and expense to aquire and learn the software.  I don't know how well these files work on macs versus pcs.  I hate macs, but am forced to use one to scan slides which then have to be reformated a number of times to be useful on the pc.
