A colleague of mine has worked in the energy-efficient design field for
the past 20 years.

A huge, major museum in the northeast (name omitted) hired an energy
consulting firm that charged a percentage of the cost of installing more
energy efficient systems.

My colleague was hired to double-check their proposal. She discovered
that simply putting in motion sensor switches, changing every single
light bulb in the non-exhibition areas to energy efficient bulbs, and
their gallery lights to more efficient ones would save more than
mounting expensive solar panels. The museum was embarrassed but happy.
The energy consulting firm was livid because they could not charge as
big a fee since museum employees could change their own lights.

The way to the most practical energy savings may vary greatly depending
on the locale. Expensive and sophisticated may not always produce the
most savings.
