Contract Book & Paper Conservator
 
The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History at the University of
Oklahoma seeks a paper conservator for up to two years for a project funded
by a Save Americaıs Treasures grant. The project is to complete conservation
treatment and re-housing of three Native American ledger books in the
collection of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.
Conservation treatment activities will be conducted in the Conservation Lab
at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. The Contract
Conservator will work closely with the museumıs Conservator.
 
One of the ledger books originated from the Kiowa Nation and two from the
Cheyenne Nation, and each serves as an important record of the customs,
religion, myths, values, and traditions that comprised nineteenth century
Native American life.  The conservation of the Kiowa ledger book will allow
production of a new publication entitled One Hundred Summers: A Kiowa
Calendar Record, currently being produced with the support the IMLS Museums
for America grant program.
 
The successful candidate must have an advanced conservation degree
specializing in paper conservation from a recognized conservation training
program or equivalent apprenticeship training.  Experience with ledger
drawings is preferred.
 
The project provides for consultant fees of up to $44,000 for the completion
of the project, with an additional stipend available for travel and lodging
to accommodate a candidate who does not plan to relocate.  This is a full or
part-time temporary position. The position will commence as soon as
possible.
