Yep.  There was a good AASLH book that I used in grad school called
_Writing Effective Exhibit Labels_.  It's a good one for those new to label
writing, like your board members.  I can't find my copy so I can't say what
the pub. date was.  It was at least 1984, 'cause that's when I used it.  I
might still be in print, but I can't swear to it.  Good luck.
