Since a change in the UK law on the licensing of authorised premises for
weddings a few years ago, many museums, galleries and historic sites and
monuments in Britain have obtained licences (which are in themselves not
cheap).
You can now be married under the dinosaurs in the London Natural History
Museum, in the Prince Regent's fantasy coastal palace at Brighton, or even
in the country's oldest criminal courtroom - the 800 year old Oakham
Castle in Rutland (which used to be part of my empire when I was museum &
arts director for Leicestershire and Rutland).
I gather than the most basic charge for such venues runs into several
hundred pounds in many cases, and four figures in some cases. In addition
the museum/monument can make a profit (or percentage commission) on other
parts of the total wedding programme, particularly catering and drinks.
