I always thought a Terminal degree was the Honorary Doctorate they finally got round to giving you two weeks before you die. :-)

On a more serious note in the UK an MA (or MSc) is usually a postgraduate degree which usually stands alone.  It may be taught, research or a combination.   An MPhil tends to be what you register for when you want a PhD or DPhil then after your first year you convert to PhD or DPhil if you have reached the required standard - MPhils are therefore entirely reasearch.

Being the UK there are of course lots of variations depending on the institution.
