Monica,

Old Town Sacramento is fun. I also enjoy the Crocker Art Museum.

If you want to drive a way (not as far as San Francisco or Napa!), Amador &
El Dorado counties (both right next to each other) offer a nice alternative
to wine tasting in Napa--much more relaxed and personal atmosphere.
Sometimes you even get to talk to the person who actually makes the wine.
There are some nice places to stay in Sutter Creek, Amador County (which is
beautiful, there's a B & B there called the Sutter Creek Inn and a great
restaurant called Zinfandel's--try the risotto). El Dorado County boasts the
town of Placerville, formerly known as Hangtown. Not far from Placerville is
Coloma, the site of the first gold find. I believe there's a state historic
park there. Amador and El Dorado counties are in the Gold Country (also
Amador is the site of "The Big Valley" of yesteryear TV fame). You can drive
from Sacramento through Amador, stay over in Sutter Creek, then on to
Placerville. Placerville is on the highway to Lake Tahoe.

You can visit Grass Valley/Nevada City (Off of Hwy 20, north of Sacramento,
on the road to Reno). Old cities with historic downtowns, antique shopping,
etc., a fun trip, also a very pretty area.
