Old City Park, The Historical Village of Dallas seeks a full-time staff
member to fill the Education Assistant position.  This staff member should
have experience leading, motivating and educating adults.  Experience
recruiting and training volunteers is preferred.  This position also
requires strong organizational skills and experience with computer programs
including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Old City Park is a thirteen-acre history museum charged with interpreting
and preserving the history of Dallas and North Central Texas from 1840 -
1910.  Using the 35+ historic structures placed on the museum grounds, the
museum offers special events, group tours and varied programs to educate
the public.  The museum sits in the shadow of Dallas' magnificent downtown
skyline offering a thought-provoking comparison between the past and
present.

Position Description

Employee:
Position Title:         Education Assistant
Reports to:             Director of Education & Programs

Education Staff Responsibilities (60%)
1.      Recruit volunteers through publicity, targeted solicitation, speakers'
bureau presentations, and other methods as determined.
2.      Assign volunteers to appropriate areas (touring docent, school tour
docent, artisans and junior docent); refer those people interested in
becoming collection volunteers to the Curator and those interested in
working at the gift shop to the McCall's Manager.
3.      Coordinate and oversee tri-annual volunteer orientation and an annual
junior docent camp.
4.      Manage the volunteer schedule (for touring docents, school tour docents,
junior docents, and craft demonstrators) and provide copies of the various
schedules to the Director of Education & Programs and other personnel, as
necessary.  This includes managing touring and corporate volunteers for
special events.
5.      Supervise part-time staff and include them in bi-monthly docent
education.
6.      Schedule part-time staff to compliment the volunteers' schedule.
7.      Plan bi-monthly continuing education sessions for the touring docents
(i.e. sensitivity training, new acquisitions, site-visits to similar
facilities, etc.).
8.      Coordinate, with the Director of Education & Programs, periodic
volunteer appreciation and recognition activities.

Group Tour Responsibilities (30%)
1.      Work with Partnership Booking Service to coordinate school tours; relay
information about upcoming school tours to craftspeople (both paid and
volunteer) and Ticket Office.  Receive money from Partnership; maintain
records of tours and payments.  Attend Partnership meetings as required.
2.      Maintain and publish a schedule of upcoming school tours; provide a
written report on school tour attendance to the Director of Education &
Programs each month.
3.      Publish a letter to the school tour docents on a monthly basis, giving
updates on changes at the museum and outlining the school tour schedule for
the coming month.  Give telephone updates (personally or via Ticket Office
staff) when this schedule changes in ways that affect the docents'
schedules.
4.      Work with school tour docents, the Director of Education & Programs, and
the curator to design and implement school tour programming.  Design, edit,
lay out, and oversee printing of school tour Teacher Guides in June of each
year.
5.      Act as liaison to teachers and other educational concerns.  Resolve
conflicts regarding student behavior, educational activities, touring
patters, etc.
6.      Receive and staff group tour requests.  For example, coordinate with
Girl Scouts and other groups to plan activities that help fulfill badge
requirements.

General Responsibilities (10%)
1.      Work with the Director of Education & Programs and other staff to
organize and implement monthly Third Saturday activities and annual special
events (i.e. Circus in the Park, Old-Fashioned Fourth of July, Texas
Country Reporter Festival, and Candlelight).
2.      Represent Old City Park at other organizations' special events (such as
the Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration), as required, and organize
activities appropriate for our participation in those events.
3.      Attend staff meetings as required and Guild meetings as available.
4.      Other duties as agreed upon with the Director of Education & Programs.
