Try typing the accession number on a slip of paper, trim the paper down
to just the number, apply a stripe of B-72 and while it is still wet,
press the paper into it. After it dries, apply another coat on top of
the paper to seal it.

I have to say, I haven't tried this myself (still being fairly new to
my present position), but that's what the Medicine Hat Museum has done
in the past. It seems to have worked well. I don't know if there are
concerns regarding types of paper (ie., acid-free vs. acidic) or ink
types--I would suspect not, as ink and paper are encapsulated by the
B-72, the same as India ink would be in the more traditional pen-and-ink
method of applying a number.

Cheers,

Hello all,
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to apply accession numbers
to
paintings on masonite? The rough surface is presenting a problem and
there
is no way to attach a tag. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
