** Mummies' newest secret: Gelled hair
Researchers believe that this fat-based hair gel was used by the Egyptians
to mold and hold the hair in position to enhance appearance, since some of
the deceased that had been mummified naturally in the desert also had fats
in their hairs

** Looking for Leonardo, With Camera in Hand
The complex tale begins in the 1970s, when the Florentine art historian
Maurizio Seracini became convinced that the mural, "The Battle of Anghiari,"
hailed by some in Leonardo's era as his finest work, was lurking behind the
wall-sized Vasari in the Hall of Five Hundred, for centuries the seat of
Florence's government

** Only surviving full-length Vincent Van Gogh portrait turns up in Grimsby
Originally thought to have been a relatively innocuous piece, young
Frenchwoman Jeanne Donnadieu's sitter could well be the great ear-cutter
himself, and a convoluted line of research involving a renamed street and a
hat and book in the picture seems to give the theory credence

** Unesco warning over Libya looting
The UN's cultural body has warned international art dealers and museums to
look out for artefacts that may have been looted from Libya during fighting

** 'Petrified' Tate staff blame new managers
A former employee at the Tate galleries has claimed that staff at the
institution are "going through hell" and that its reputation is on the line,
after The Independent had exposed an alleged culture of bullying implicating
senior managers

** And you think you knew the 'Mona Lisa'
A French clairvoyant, Madame Albane de Siva, told the Paris-Journal
newspaper that, according to the planets, the thief was a "young man with
thick hair" and that the famous painting had not left the grounds of the
museum

** Yeast's Epic Journey 500 Years Ago Gave Rise to Lager Beer
In the 15th century, when Europeans first began moving people and goods
across the Atlantic, a microscopic stowaway somehow made its way to the
caves and monasteries of Bavaria

** Has Sculpture Become Just Another Pretty Face?
Critics bow to fashion and a legacy of lazy disdain, largely avoiding the
topic - I've done it myself, so I know - and museums only perpetuate the
cycle, offering a steady flow of Botticelli, Monet and Rembrandt
exhibitions, before which we genuflect like medieval pilgrims praying before
sculptured shrines

** Museum Defends the Teen's Debunked Solar Discovery
Sure a million zillion blogs had written up the boy-genius, but isn't it
curious that an institution of knowledge didn't notice the flaws before
awarding him the award and writing up his achievements?

** World's First Pathology Museum Threatened with Closure
The Berlin Medical Historical Museum at Charité Hospital has to be the
creepiest part of the city's rich cultural landscape and according to
Director Thomas Schnalke, visitors have even fainted at the sight of some
exhibits, falling down and "hitting their heads against the building's stone
floor."

** Museum Employee jailed for faking Army career

preventing him telling fact from fiction

British attack on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812
