I admire your spirit for believing that you'd actually reach a live body by calling your 
local (or any other) tax office at this time of year!

You're absolutely correct about each identifying (or should I say limited to claimng 
only) 50% interest. If you review Form 8283, you'll note Section A Part II: Partial 
Interests and Restricted Use Property. Line 2a indicates which item is to be identified 
as partial interest and Line 2b requires the actual amount claimed for that item.

I hope your donors are appreciative of your diligence!  As the beneficiary, it is 
certainly your museum's duty to ensure that paperwork is completed correctly before 
you or another representative sign-off (no point in your organization coming under 
federal scrutiny).  May I add that it's essential that you maintain copies (of course you 
will!) of tax forms? But I note this in the off-chance that the 8282 (sales & disposition 
form)  needs to be filed if your museum elects to dispose, sell or transfer the property 
within two years of the original gift. One form should reflect the other with great 
accuracy....
