Hi, Cristin;

Over the years, I've been responsible for four of them. Two of them had custom crates built for them, and were stored inside them, so moving them around was just like moving any other crate. The other two had wall racks built for them, with contoured arms to cradle them.

Definitely try to have a custom made cradle for it, if you're going to be moving it about much. Also, try to keep the relative humidity it's exposed to fairly steady--the bark will split easily if exposed to too drastic an RH change, and the ribs, gunwales, and other structural parts are also fairly susceptible to warping in fluctuating RH.

The Canoe Museum in Peterborough might be able to offer more specific information; http://www.canoemuseum.net/

Does anyone have experience with the "care and feeding" of birch bark
canoes in their collections? We are looking for information about how
you maintain them as collections objects, what particular preservation
or conservation issues they may have, and also how you transport them.
We are potentially facing a situation where we would be moving one by
truck from another town about 4 hours away, and we would also be moving
the canoe on and off exhibit once it's here. If anyone has any
experience or expertise with this type of object, I'd very much like to
hear from you.

Thank you!
