Dear Ms. Dyer,
You would do well to mix good quality tube acrylics in various dirt colors
and apply them with various tools, such as brushes, sea sponges and
toothbrushes (f/ spattering), depending on the effect you want. You can
also put them (thinned) in an airbrush or spray gun for overall dust
effects. All of these methods produce a durable dirty effect that is very
low-impact for the rest of the room. They are even washable, though the
more subtle effects may fade a bit in a machine. If the fabric needs
distressing, I recommend a wool card or a file card. Both tools are
identical, though I think file cards are easier to find. The tool has rows
of stiff metal wires set in a flat piece of wood with a handle. These are
wonderful for fraying fabric and producing worn areas with a great deal of
control. Also, if you want something to really look tattered, yet still
hold together, you can attach the tatters to a fine fishnet. The fishnet is
hard to see, so the tatters will appear to hang in mid-air. Happy
distressing and painting down!

Cordially,

Paul Pallansch
