Historic Preservation

The Department of Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington 
invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position.  
In addition to teaching the introductory sequence in historic preservation, the 
successful candidate will assume primary responsibility for courses focusing on 
museum practice, the place of artifacts in historical interpretation, and best 
practices in the curation and public presentation of material culture. 

M.A. or M.S. in Museum Studies required, with a Ph.D. in a relevant field 
(American History, American Studies, History of Science and Technology, 
Library Science) is preferred.  Previous teaching and professional museum 
experience is preferred.  The Department of Historic Preservation offers an 
interdisciplinary major that educates students as to a broad range of 
preservation activities, methods, and theoretical perspectives.  For additional

The successful applicant will come with experience in providing undergraduate 
students a challenging learning environment in which the past is interpreted in 
the museum context.  Use of CAD or other digital imaging software and the 
ability to instruct students on multiple means of public presentation as those 
are evolving in the museum and archival fields is important.  The successful 
applicant also should speak to how ethics relate to methods of displaying and 
interpreting cultural materials and information.
