The Virginia Historical Society (Richmond, Virginia) has the following position available:

Title: Exhibit Designer 

Department: Programs

Reports to: Exhibits Production Manager 

Supervises: Exhibit contractors, interns, work study students, volunteers. 

Summary: The exhibit designer plans, designs, and helps oversee the construction, and installation of long-term and temporary exhibitions and displays, and assists in the installation, dismantling, and maintenance of long-term and temporary exhibitions. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

•  Plan, design, and help oversee the construction and installation of long-term and temporary exhibitions and displays 
•  Prepare sketches, floor plans, layout and elevation drawings, and construction drawings for review, fabrication, and installation
•  Work closely with curators to develop the themes, content, and organization of VHS exhibitions
•  Work with the graphic designer to develop concepts and designs for exhibition needs in order to produce an integrated exhibition experience
•  Assist in the installation, dismantling, and ongoing maintenance of long-term and temporary exhibitions and displays
•  Work closely with members of the Collections Division to design, plan, and construct mounts or supports for objects in new and existing exhibitions
•  Assist the exhibits production manager in planning budgets and schedules
•  Oversee the work of contractors and other vendors in the implementation of the exhibit design
•  Order materials and equipment for exhibitions and ensure the proper use and maintenance of that equipment
•  Occasionally assist in the transportation and installation of artifacts for both in-state and out-of-state exhibitions

Knowledge, skills and abilities necessary: 

•  A thorough knowledge of computer design programs and techniques including: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PhotoShop, AutoCAD/Vector Works, Acrobat and Microsoft Word
•  Experience in art handling (preparing, installing, de installing, and packing) and a thorough knowledge of best practices
•  Experience fabricating artifact mounts (brass and Plexiglas) and a thorough knowledge of fabrication methods and materials
•  Knowledge of archival matting, framing, and presentation.
•  A working knowledge of museum lighting design and installation
•  Strong organization and time management skills 
•  General carpentry and construction skills
•  General knowledge of electronics and audiovisual systems
•  Ability to work on ladders and lifts at elevations up to 30-feet
•  Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Education and experience required: 

Requires an undergraduate degree in studio art, graphic design, or related field, and a minimum of four years experience either designing or producing museum exhibitions.
