Check with Bonnie Pitman, Executive Director, Bay Area Discovery Museum, Sausalito, CA, she recently quoted that finding at a meeting.  Also the AAM Publication, Excellence and equity,  the findings about the role of education in museums is supported by good statistical information, this may be where that finding was first addressed.

There was some research done a while back that indicated that museum attendance among adults is more closely correlated to whether the subject, as a child, visited museums with her/his family than than with a school group.

Does anyone remember what study that was or where the findings are cited?
