Have you tried reminding them that a gift is not a gift if
 there are strings attached?  If everything fails, then
 perhaps you're better off without the artifact.  Part of
your job is to protect and conserve the artifact.  With
the donor demanding conditions, you can't do that part
of your job.  It's a shame though.
