Re: info on web-site production.  We're a mid-sized museum with 9 staff
(5FT, 4 PT) and a budget of about $350,000.


1.  Since we're a city museum, our website was designed to complement the
city's website.  Therefore our website was contracted out for design.
However, we had several months of planning and discussions with our
webmaster before the site was up and running.

2.  We provide updates on a once-a-month basis to the webmaster.  I am the
person who does those updates and who checks the site regularly to make sure
we're up-to-date and everything's correct.  I spend no more than 4-5 hours a
month on the work.

3.  We have a services agreement with the webmaster which describes such
items as the work product (including artistic control/changes and
termination), payment, warranty, liability, confidentiality, and ownership.
Our site startup charge was about $1,500, and our monthly
maintenance/updates cost $80-110 (1.5-2 hours @ $55/hour).

4.  We *are* happy with the result.  It's not a sparkling website, but it's
accurate, reflects our work and the city, is constantly updated, and, I
think, is easy to use.  These are the goals we had in mind for startup.  In
the future we may "glamorize" the site more, but as a mid-sized museum, we
have many other priorities.

5.  At a meeting last month I just learned about the Bobby website for
making our site more accessible.  We're going to be working on that in the
next few months.
