This reminds me of something that used to go on among my fellow museum
guides at the astronomy museum I work at. We all have good basic science and
academic backgrounds, but we would often discuss our specific interests
which spread among the sciences and most of the humanities. Whenever someone
went to long using technical terminology that is only meaningless blather to
someone not actively involved in the field, anyone interested in the topic
but unable to follow the specific terminology would interrupt by saying
"jargon." The offender would then slow down and explain in more common
language. It helped keep us aware of what we were saying to the public as a
completely unintended side effect (we were just talking with our friends).
