You might check out the Univ. of South Carolina in Columbia. We've had several interns and staff members come thru their program. They have both academic and applied degrees (which includes a museum component and opportunities for hands-on work at both the South Carolina State Museum and the USC McKissick Museum (mostly art). I know they offer both in history and I think they also offer the same in art history.

Jill Koverman, curator of Education at the McKissick got her MA in art history (the academic track) ([log in to unmask]). Carrie Taylor, now registrar at Monticell,([log in to unmask]) went thru their applied history program as did Gordon Jones ([log in to unmask]), our Curator of Military History. I know there is also a public history program at Middle Tennessee State University. I think there is an art/art history grad program there too, but I don't know whether there is museum component with it or not. Ask Myers Brown, our associate curator of military history for more info ([log in to unmask]).

I'm sure any of these folks will be happy to talk with you about their experiences.

Good luck and say Hi to Alvin Gerhardt when you see him..

Hi. I'm an undergraduate student in Museum Studies, and I am planning on going to grad school for Art History. My goal is to work in a large art musrum or gallery like the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, or even the National Gallery. Does anyone have any reccomandations for good master's degree-granting art history programs? I'm looking for a state supported school in a large-to-medium city (doesn't matter which state, since out of state tuition is usually cheaper than any private school) Also, what should I look for in a master's program? Thanks!
