Indiana Historical Society
Executive Director

The Indiana Historical Society was founded in 1830 and is the oldest
statewide historical institution west of the Appalachians. The organization
now serves some 11,000 members and in 1999 opened the doors to its new
four-story 165,000 square-foot home.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is responsible
for the leadership and management of the Society through the development and
implementation of a long-range strategic plan. The Executive Director is
accountable to the Board for administration of a current operating budget of
approximately $7 million and an employee group of about 97 full-time and
part-time staff supported by over 500 volunteers. Current endowment is in
excess of $138 million.

A master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university is
required; a doctoral degree would be a plus. Evidence of continuing
professional education and involvement in life-long learning programs would
be helpful, particularly in the field of history. Participation in
national, state and/or regional professional membership organizations
pertinent to the field would be expected.

Indiana State Museum
Museum Director

The Indiana State Museum (ISM) was created in 1869 as a cabinet of the
Indiana Geological Survey responsible for accumulating natural history
specimens. In 1916, the ISM joined the Department of Conservation, which
later became the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), its current
oversight agency.

The Museum Director is responsible for managing all issues related to the
operation of the new Indiana State Museum and serves as a member of the
Project Team. We seek an accomplished museum professional whose leadership
and management background demonstrates a proven ability to work in close
partnership with a variety of public and private constituents in order to
build and develop facilities and programs. Prior Museum experience in
exhibit design, space planning, new program development and capital
development management is highly desirable. This person should demonstrate
a track record in successful financial management, budgeting and business
administration.

The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to manage
imaginative and interactive exhibits and develop programs for children and
families. The use of audience development strategies including marketing
techniques designed to identify and promote the new Museum to diverse
population segments would be helpful.

Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor of arts degree from an
accredited university. Additional studies or degree(s) at the graduate
level is preferred in such fields as museum management, business
administration, or architecture. Evidence of continuing professional
education would be helpful.
