A conservator friend of mine recommended using Marvelseal (it's silver on one
side, and you can iron it on to the surface) on wood. We never did the
experiment, I'm sorry to say, but it's another material to consider.

You can take some comfort in my home experience: the books I kept on
untreated wooden shelves did not burn on the edges, while those on "laminated
particle board" shelves did burn-- rapidly and noticeably.
