Yes, CDs are used quite commonly -- the Seattle Art Museum has a
particularly good tour, in my opinion.  Another option is digital memory
chips, much like those used in a PC.  The Shedd Aquarium's Fish Phone
uses these, as do many other institutions.

The two largest audio tour companies in the US, Antennae and
Acoustiguide, can supply information on CD, digital, and tape systems.
