The dissemination of information is part of the conservators job
description and we are always happy to offer our advice and opinion. I
believe it was Diane's intention to halt the "speculative" aspects of
handing out treatment proposals.
However, I must add that we, as conservators, are reluctant to offer
treatment advice without a proper examination as every object is
different. But I also realize that many people, both curators with small
budgets and the general public, are going to try things themselves
regardless of the warnings so I feel a need to help on whatever way I can
to ensure the safety of the object and the person. I do not feel that
conservators are condescending, just worried........
