Hirasaki National Resource Center Archivist

Overview
The Archivist is responsible for bringing an archival approach to the
Japanese American National Museum's management of the archival and
manuscript collection within the National Museum's permanent collections,
for developing and maintaining the National Museum's instititutional
archives, and for facilitating the use of these collections.

Duties and Responsibilities
 Promote an understanding of the archival paradigm for cultural resources
management as it relates to the needs of the National Museum in managing
its diverse primary, secondary, and institutional collections

 Oversee processing and assist in the description of archival and
manuscript collections in the National Museum's permanent collections;
develop print and digital access tools as appropriate to enhance the use
and understanding of these collections; provide input on collection
development for these materials as necessary

 Develop an institutional records management and archives program and
ensure its implementation through appropriate policies and procedures

 Facilitate access to and understanding of archival and manuscript
collections in the National Museum's custody for all users - both internal
and external

 Participation in all HNRC activities as required (e.g., staffing the HNRC
reference desk), assist in the development and implementation of grant
projects, participate in National Museum activities as appropriate

Qualifications
 The position requires an MA or MLS degree with concentration in archives
from an ALA-accredited library school. Knowledge of contemporary archival
standards and records management principles and practices. A minimum of
three-years professional experience processing collections in an archives,
museum, or manuscript repository. Able to process collections and develop
print and electronic finding aids.  Excellent written, oral and
interpersonal communication skills. Must have basic technical competence
with electronic means of recording and managing data. Ability to train and
constructively evaluate student interns and volunteers.  Commitment to
serving the public and working as a team with small staff.

Desireable
 Familiarity with community based organizations with non-traditional means
of promoting use of archival materials.  Demonstrated knowledge of
Japanese American Studies and Japanese language skills; ability to work
some weekends.
