Chris, any period appearance polypropylene runner should work. I would check the backing material to ensure it is not rough, if it is then a layer of 1/8 " untreated felt should provide enough padding and protection. Check under the runner periodically when undertaking your scheduled maintenance to ensure all is well and it is not a hiding place for insects. Also ensure that dirt and grit is removed promply as this will work as an abrasive between the layers.

Thanks to all those who responded to my question about protecting antique
rugs in historic houses. You were a big help. Now, a follow-up question: Do
you know of any suppliers of museum quality runners to place over the rugs?
Any leads would be helpful.

Thanks again,
