The Health Museum of Cleveland
The Health Museum of Cleveland seeks a high energy, creative professional
to design and implement its vision for the future of our education
programs:
*international recognition as a leader in health education through formal
and informal techniques.
*innovative approach to the health and life science education of youth.
*state leadership in education of adults for wellness and disease prevention.
*worldwide health education through traveling exhibitions, the Internet,
and written curricula.
*leadership in wellness programming for the local corporate community.
*accessibility and active engagement with diverse audiences and communities.
The Health Museum of Cleveland is undergoing a revitalization of its
exhibits and programs. Our strategic plan includes a year-long facility
closure starting the summer of 1998. The Director of Education will need to
analyze our existing programs, identify a strategy for aligning them with
current educational theory and practice, and implement this strategy in
time for the museum's reopening in 1999.
The Director of Education will:
1. Oversee all education programs of the Health Museum of Cleveland:
a.Youth Education: School/Camp/Day care programs; Workshops; Camp-Ins;
Outreach.
b.Adult Education: Seminars covering human performance testing,
nutrition/food preparation courses, holistic health, women's health,
minority health, etc.
c.Community Education: Health fairs, senior programs, smoking cessation, etc.
d.Professional Education: Professional development for health care
providers; health education training for students and faculty from other
Health Education Centers.
e.Corporate/Worksite Health Education: Provision of health education on
contract basis to local companies.
f.Healthy Acts Theater: Health education through theater, with a company of
adolescent and college-age performers, writers, and technicians.
2.Manage six full-time staff and up to 20 part-time staff.
3.Manage operating budget of $250,000.
4.Analysis and complete restructuring of an existing school program in time
for opening of renovated museum.
5.Participate in planning for museum renovation, including 12 themed
multimedia classrooms and 25,000 square feet of exhibits.
6.Maintain adult, community, and youth education program visibility through
museum closure via outreach.
7.Implement new programs to serve new audiences, including public programs,
peer educators, docents, family workshops, and theater (after reopening).
8.Build new audiences for education programs, including homeschoolers,
teachers, health educators, and people beyond our traditional geographic
limits (after reopening).
9.Maintain and expand exisiting evaluation strategies for all programs
(after reopening).
10.Contribute technical expertise to fundraising efforts.
Qualifications:
1.Ten years of experience in museum education, with three to five years at
a management level.
2.Master's degree in museum education, life science education or health
education, Bachelor's degree in related field.
3.References required.
4.Minimum three year commitment.
