It's an ongoing argument...goes back a long way. It is about control. 
The more explained, the more the every day person has ownership of 
the mysteries and that puts the priest/minister.shaman in a less 
powerful role. Changing the mass from Latin to the vernacular was 
even a struggle.
  So the "they" is an ever-changing group of (mainly) men who want to 
keep the sheep asleep.
   Poor Bill Frist--he dared to support stem cell research and now he 
has been disinvited to Justice Sunday2.
