Hello Honey,

By its most common definition, "community outreach" means being a
front-line representative for that contemporary art foundation. That
person might, depending on the organizations needs, disseminate
information to and gather information from the community to ease the
development of a give-and-take relationship. community outreach seems
to be a hybrid of public relations and development (i.e., fundraising).
The general public will need to know what the contemporary art
foundation does on a short- and long-term basis. The contemporary art
foundation will need to know who to canvas for donations -- monetary,
material or otherwise. To find out information about the general
public, you might consider contacting the local chamber of commerce,
running a survey, holding an "open house" with people signing up for a
mailing list, etc.
I am sure more people have more to add . . . ?

Yours truly,

Jay Heuman

Subject: What does a community outreach coordinator do exactly?

Hello all, this is my first question on museum.net although I am sure
you
will read more of me in the future. I am a senior finishing up a BA
in
sociology and planning to go to grad school for my MA in art history.
(Yes, I am prepared to eat ramen until I am old and gray!) I have
potentially been offered a position doing community outreach for a
contemporary art foundation and I am curios as to what I should/will be
doing. I believe the program is new so I am pretty open as to where I
can
take this position. If you have any thoughts to help me, thanks so
much
ahead!

H. Tondre
